CLAUDIA CHAPLINE
Claudia Chapline is a multimedia artist and arts presenter: painter, poet, art journalist, former college professor, choreographer, founder and director of galleries for new
art in Santa Monica and Sacramento, consultant and mentor. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa, Cum Laude with Special Honors in Art from Corcoran School of Art and
The George Washington University, she earned an M.A. in dance therapy at Washington University.

During most of her long career she has worked on the leading edge of art as healing, performance art, fiber sculpture, assemblage, and installation. Her art has been
exhibited in hundreds of museum and gallery exhibitions throughout the U.S.A., in Canada, Europe, Latin America, Korea and Japan.

She taught at Washington University, University of Missouri and was a professor at California State University, Northridge and UCLA. As Manager of the Art in Public
Buildings Program for the California Arts Council she coordinated numerous public art projects for State facilities, developed public art plans and consulted with
California cities and counties. She has served on many boards, providing leadership to community arts organizations.

I.D.E.A. (Institute for Dance and Experimental Art)was the
first alternative performance space in Southern California.
The Gallery currently houses 50 notebooks of black
and white photographs of Claudia Chapline’s performances
from1973-1982. Videotapes, audiotapes,and slides of the
I.D.E.A. Company performances and performances by artists
in new dance, theatre, music and art performance are at
the UCLA Art Library Special Collections
(Claudia Chapline Collection).
