ITALO SCANGA
1932-2001
Italo Scanga’s works are powerful, using images basic to nature,
life, work, the home and family. Italian-born, Scanga was a master
of mixed media. His bronzes were created by combining unrelated
found objects and casting them. The collection includes paintings
with a complex of images and art historical references, painted
wood sculptures, welded steel and Pilchuk glass sculptures, all
with a great sense of the energy of life.

Scanga was the precursor of all the artists in residence that
Chihuly brought to Pilchuck, and also the one with the longest
lasting closest ties to Pilchuck and its artists. He was a
powerful influence on west coast art through his teaching at
Pilchuck and the University of California, San Diego.
